Porter's sequential continuity editing links several shots to form a narrative of the famous fairy tale story of Jack and his magic beanstalk. Borrowing on cinematographic methods reminiscent of 'Georges Melies' , Porter uses animation, double exposure, and trick photography to illustrate the fairy's apparitions, Jack's dream, and the fast growing beanstalk. Directors: George S. Fleming, Edwin S. Porter Stars:Thomas White Topics: Short, Fantasy
This is a bit of an experiment. As fans of silent films will know Georges Melies was restricted to an immobile camera so his films are really a series of short scenes like small plays. He did fill these scenes with people and activity though. I decided to see what I could do with one of these films by imposing zooms, pans etc along with music and sounds. I only wish the quality of the original had been better and will try this again with another Melies film. Remember, this is NOT meant to be a... Topics: Melies, voyage, train, rocket, alsedit
Georges Melies, 1903. (Also refereed to as the infernal Boiling Pot) Here is a description from Wikipedia. "The film shows a green-skinned demon who places a woman and then two courtiers into a burning cauldron. He performs an incantation and three spirits suddenly appear from the flames, before dancing above his head. Frolicking in hellish joy, the demon watches as the three spirits burn up and fall to earth.". Topics: France, Melies, Color, silents
A selection of some of the earliest silent films. They are unidentified, but the first, The Car, looks like it came from Melies while the second, The Derby, is probably from the Lumiere Brothers. There is a paper print from Edison, and a very telling shot of Tsar Nicholas and entourage parading in front of the peasants in 1911. His days were numbered at that time. Early SciFi film with war Zeppelin like aircrafts destroying civilian areas. Emazingly enough, this film anounces not so much the WWI, which hadn't occured yet, but WWII (the Blitz, numerous destroyed cities and Millions of civilians killed...) Films have too often dreadful premonitions... Alice Guy-Blache [1873-1968] is not as well-known as Georges Melies but just as prolific and influential. Here is a short film called "La Glu" involving the mischievous adventures of a boy with a bucket of glue that resembles today's cyanoacrylate equivalent--Super Glue. The collected works by Alice Guy-Blache when she was associated with Gaumont Films is available from Kino http://www.kino.com/video/item.php?film_id=988 . Wikipedia... NOTE: Only a fragment of this film survives. Here is what remains. By the time this short subject came out, Segundo de Chomón had bested Georges Melies at his own game. His camera magic was as fully developed as Melies. His sense of humor was sharper and his scenes had invaded the real world. Many of the shots of this split-reel short about a bizarre group of tramp musicians who disappear into and out of drums, beach umbrellas and whatnots are shot in the street and the others are on stages... This is the same Trip To The Moon that you will find in three other places on the Archive, one of them mine. I realized after uploading that those versions went at the video speed of 30 frames per second. Those movies were originally projected at 18 frames per second. I went back to my editing program but the closest I could come to it was 20 fps. I thought I would have to replace the music, but slowing it down like that did something t it which is not unpleasant. enjoy. â ( 4 reviews ) Topics: Melies, sci-fi, science, moon, silent

Classic sci-fi from 1961. A rocket crashes on an invisible planet during an investigation. The surviving astronaut encounters a race of miniature people: the women are VERY interested! The low budget belies the fact films like this were thematically the precursor to modern sci-fi.
